The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Intellectual Property Liaison, you will partner with a global team of skilled researchers, R&D management, and legal professionals in the creation, management, and protection of intellectual property assets: patenting process, right to practice analysis, and trade secret protection.  The ideal candidate will have a STEM degree and will have experience in one or more of computer science, software, or digital technologies (e.g., digital logic, computing networks) and related product offerings.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience with patents and/or managing projects or workflow streams.

As an Intellectual Property Liaison, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Partners with IP attorneys, patent agents, and R&D clients agents to create and manage patent and trade secret assets, including:
    • Invention identification and patentability assessment
    • Analysis and interpretation of technical information to support patent attorneys and agents drafting and prosecuting patent applications
    • Teaming with laboratory, business, and IP attorneys and agents to manage the IP portfolios to ensure most effective use of budget
    • May write parts or entire patent applications, may prosecute patent applications
  • Works closely with a high-performance global team of R&D client inventors, management, patent attorneys, and agents for strategic management of patent portfolios
  • Communicates results of a wide range of IP activities to the legal, business, and technical communities
  • Prepares reports, presentations, and other written documents
  • Provides IP education to internal clients


Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) years of creating/managing IP assets, product R&D, or project management experience in a private, public, government or military environment.
  • Practical experience in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, computer programming/coding, or software engineering in a private, public, government or military environment.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Master’s degree or higher in a technical discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of and experience with patent laws, regulations, and practices globally, particularly with respect to recent developments relating to software patents
  • Registered patent agent in good standing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”)
  • Ability to respond to rapidly changing business needs and triage multiple tasks accordingly
  • Experience searching and analyzing technical literature, including patents
  • Self-starter, with good organizational skills, who is diligent and attentive to details
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Travel: May include up to 5% domestic/international

Remote work may be authorized.

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Responsibilities of this position may include direct and/or indirect physical or logical access to information, systems, technologies subjected to the regulations/compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.
